Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.97% to hit a new 1-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TSX:TRQ), which rose 13.95% or 5.04 points to trade at 41.16 at the close. Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) added 10.03% or 0.79 points to end at 8.67 and Alimentation Couche Tard Inc (TSX:ATD) was up 4.13% or 2.33 points to 58.77 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Energy Fuels Inc. (TSX:EFR), which lost 10.87% or 1.16 points to trade at 9.51 in late trade. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) declined 9.60% or 2.23 points to end at 21.01 and Dye & Durham Ltd (TSX:DND) shed 7.88% or 1.15 points to 13.45.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 764 to 244 and 78 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.18% to 22.20 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.14% or 19.65 to $1,706.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 3.55% or 3.18 to hit $86.37 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 3.71% or 3.55 to trade at $92.09 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.17% to 0.76, while CAD/EUR rose 0.99% to 0.76.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.91% at 109.65.
