Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the IT, Materials and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.50%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Aphria Inc (TSX:APHA), which rose 9.26% or 0.540 points to trade at 6.370 at the close. Shaw Communications Inc Class B (TSX:SJRb) added 5.97% or 1.34 points to end at 23.80 and Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (TSX:GC) was up 5.15% or 1.35 points to 27.58 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP), which lost 10.91% or 3.04 points to trade at 24.83 in late trade. OceanaGold Corporation (TSX:OGC) declined 8.26% or 0.280 points to end at 3.110 and NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG) shed 7.33% or 0.88 points to 11.12.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 539 to 488 and 96 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.24% or 4.35 to $1806.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 2.32% or 0.94 to hit $39.61 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 2.29% or 0.99 to trade at $42.25 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.09% to 0.7349, while CAD/EUR fell 0.51% to 0.6477.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.14% at 96.477.
