Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.59%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canadian Energy Services & Technology Corp (TO:CEU), which rose 5.65% or 0.270 points to trade at 5.050 at the close. Secure Energy Services Inc . (TO:SES) added 5.47% or 0.47 points to end at 9.07 and Lundin Mining Corporation (TO:LUN) was up 5.21% or 0.270 points to 5.450 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Teck Resources Ltd (TO:TCKb), which lost 7.94% or 1.92 points to trade at 22.27 in late trade. First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR) declined 5.90% or 0.98 points to end at 15.63 and Sandstorm Gold Ltd . (TO:SSL) shed 4.92% or 0.360 points to 6.960.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 727 to 415 and 130 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 11.45% to 12.61 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.71% or 9.45 to $1340.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 1.72% or 0.78 to hit $46.12 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.49% or 0.70 to trade at $47.53 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.38% to 0.7662, while CAD/EUR rose 0.26% to 0.6838.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.13% at 95.34.
