Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, Financials and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.30%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Amaya Inc (TO:AYA), which rose 14.39% or 2.64 points to trade at 20.98 at the close. Intertape Polymer Group Inc . (TO:ITP) added 8.36% or 1.88 points to end at 24.38 and Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG) was up 6.40% or 0.70 points to 11.63 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM), which lost 4.57% or 0.65 points to trade at 13.57 in late trade. Pure Industrial REIT (TO:AAR_u) declined 4.57% or 0.24 points to end at 5.01 and Aecon Group Inc . (TO:ARE) shed 4.57% or 0.64 points to 13.35.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 633 to 536 and 131 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.11% to 15.89.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.25% or 3.00 to $1221.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.58% or 0.25 to hit $43.66 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.20% or 0.09 to trade at $44.66 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 0.7380, while CAD/EUR rose 0.98% to 0.6869.
The US Dollar Index was up 1.00% at 99.98.
