Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.03%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX:VET), which rose 11.67% or 2.69 points to trade at 25.74 at the close. HudBay Minerals Inc (TSX:HBM) added 6.92% or 0.38 points to end at 5.87 and Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TSX:AAV) was up 6.83% or 0.53 points to 8.29 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Bombardier Inc (TSX:BBDb), which lost 17.27% or 3.99 points to trade at 19.12 in late trade. Descartes Systems Group Inc (TSX:DSG) declined 5.78% or 4.89 points to end at 79.73 and SSR Mining Inc (TSX:SSRM) shed 4.74% or 1.15 points to 23.10.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 545 to 473 and 93 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 5.78% to 21.37.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.38% or 6.95 to $1,823.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.92% or 2.07 to hit $109.69 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.79% or 1.95 to trade at $111.05 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.14% to 0.78, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.09% to 0.73.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.26% at 103.69.
