Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Discretionary and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.81% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Semafo Inc . (TSX:SMF), which rose 10.32% or 0.260 points to trade at 2.780 at the close. HudBay Minerals Inc (TSX:HBM) added 9.76% or 0.40 points to end at 4.50 and Seven Generations Energy Ltd (TSX:VII) was up 9.11% or 0.58 points to 6.95 in late trade.
Biggest losers included ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. (TSX:ATA), which lost 4.97% or 1.03 points to trade at 19.69 in late trade. Bombardier Inc (TSX:BBDb) declined 3.27% or 0.050 points to end at 1.480 and Canopy Growth Corp (TSX:WEED) shed 3.13% or 0.930 points to 28.780.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 751 to 310 and 106 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.32% or 5.00 to $1560.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 3.12% or 1.55 to hit $51.16 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 3.00% or 1.62 to trade at $55.58 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.11% to 0.7524, while CAD/EUR rose 0.32% to 0.6842.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.34% at 98.140.
