Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Materials, Industrials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.69%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Sprott Inc . (TSX:SII), which rose 7.13% or 3.10 points to trade at 46.57 at the close. TFI International Inc (TSX:TFII) added 7.02% or 8.58 points to end at 130.88 and Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX:WDO) was up 5.76% or 0.68 points to 12.49 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cenovus Energy Inc (TSX:CVE), which lost 6.70% or 1.31 points to trade at 18.25 in late trade. Baytex Energy Corp (TSX:BTE) declined 6.65% or 0.340 points to end at 4.770 and Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX:CPG) shed 6.59% or 0.55 points to 7.79.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 551 to 480 and 109 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.62% to 23.01.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.38% or 6.85 to $1828.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 2.09% or 1.91 to hit $89.41 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 2.00% or 1.85 to trade at $90.84 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.31% to 0.7869, while CAD/EUR fell 0.11% to 0.6891.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.20% at 95.585.
