Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Healthcare, Energy and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.67% to hit a new 1-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canopy Growth Corp (TSX:WEED), which rose 13.03% or 2.680 points to trade at 23.255 at the close. Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) added 11.72% or 2.50 points to end at 23.84 and Aphria Inc (TSX:APHA) was up 10.24% or 0.695 points to 7.485 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP), which lost 4.24% or 1.03 points to trade at 23.29 in late trade. Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX:BEP_u) declined 3.99% or 2.81 points to end at 67.63 and Westshore Terminals Investment Corp (TSX:WTE) shed 3.02% or 0.45 points to 14.46.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 750 to 321 and 101 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.39% or 7.45 to $1898.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 3.33% or 1.33 to hit $41.28 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 3.45% or 1.45 to trade at $43.44 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.45% to 0.7577, while CAD/EUR rose 0.50% to 0.6444.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 93.630.
