Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Clean Technology, Energy and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.38% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP), which rose 12.95% or 2.14 points to trade at 18.66 at the close. Torex Gold Resources Inc (TSX:TXG) added 9.49% or 1.79 points to end at 20.66 and Whitecap Resources Inc . (TSX:WCP) was up 5.68% or 0.26 points to 4.84 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR), which lost 8.54% or 1.15 points to trade at 12.31 in late trade. Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) declined 6.18% or 2.30 points to end at 34.93 and Lightspeed POS Inc (TSX:LSPD) shed 5.77% or 2.28 points to 37.24.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 612 to 420 and 133 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.68% or 10.85 to $1614.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 2.18% or 1.14 to hit $53.43 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 2.25% or 1.30 to trade at $59.05 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.29% to 0.7562, while CAD/EUR rose 0.11% to 0.6995.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.14% at 99.477.
