Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the IT, Clean Technology and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.31%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Lightspeed POS Inc (TSX:LSPD), which rose 11.68% or 9.08 points to trade at 86.80 at the close. Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) added 7.32% or 112.56 points to end at 1650.00 and Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) was up 7.03% or 1.88 points to 28.61 in late trade.
Biggest losers included SilverCrest Metals Inc (TSX:SIL), which lost 6.13% or 0.80 points to trade at 12.26 in late trade. First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR) declined 5.88% or 0.99 points to end at 15.85 and Osisko Mining Corp (TSX:OSK) shed 5.79% or 0.22 points to 3.58.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 522 to 473 and 130 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.79% or 14.95 to $1867.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 1.54% or 0.74 to hit $47.23 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 1.24% or 0.63 to trade at $50.28 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.42% to 0.7744, while CAD/EUR rose 0.27% to 0.6368.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.68% at 90.562.
