Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Healthcare, Energy and REITs sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which rose 23.60% or 2.23 points to trade at 11.68 at the close. Aphria Inc (TSX:APHA) added 16.69% or 2.120 points to end at 14.820 and Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX:CPG) was up 8.94% or 0.32 points to 3.90 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP), which lost 6.53% or 3.03 points to trade at 43.37 in late trade. Boralex Inc (TSX:BLX) declined 5.14% or 2.85 points to end at 52.55 and Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX:BEP_u) shed 4.70% or 2.81 points to 57.03.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 671 to 408 and 92 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.40% or 7.40 to $1847.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.10% or 0.58 to hit $53.49 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.57% or 0.32 to trade at $56.38 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.50% to 0.7914, while CAD/EUR rose 0.56% to 0.6513.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 90.243.
