Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.11%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP), which rose 6.84% or 0.24 points to trade at 3.75 at the close. Capstone Mining Corp (TSX:CS) added 5.66% or 0.50 points to end at 9.33 and CAE Inc. (TSX:CAE) was up 4.54% or 1.13 points to 26.03 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX:LSPD), which lost 5.47% or 1.08 points to trade at 18.67 in late trade. Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) declined 3.49% or 3.19 points to end at 88.14 and Primo Water Corp (TSX:PRMW) shed 2.62% or 0.82 points to 30.46.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 498 to 461 and 118 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.09% to 10.43.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.67% or 15.65 to $2,344.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.29% or 1.03 to hit $80.75 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.32% or 1.11 to trade at $85.36 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.07% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.00% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.06% at 104.88.
