Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the IT, REITs and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX:BIR), which rose 9.68% or 0.45 points to trade at 5.10 at the close. Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TSX:AAV) added 5.87% or 0.50 points to end at 9.02 and Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) was up 4.29% or 4.72 points to 114.69 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Finning International Inc . (TSX:FTT), which lost 9.19% or 3.65 points to trade at 36.07 in late trade. NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG) declined 5.26% or 0.17 points to end at 3.06 and Africa Oil Corp (TSX:AOI) shed 4.08% or 0.10 points to 2.35.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 505 to 433 and 124 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.21% to 11.38.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.09% or 1.75 to $2,049.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.02% or 0.75 to hit $74.06 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.97% or 0.76 to trade at $79.35 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.22% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.06% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.15% at 103.92.
