Investing.com – Australia equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Metals & Mining, Materials and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 added 1.90%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Sandfire Resources NL (ASX:SFR), which rose 12.12% or 0.680 points to trade at 6.290 at the close. Paladin Energy Ltd (ASX:PDN) added 6.82% or 0.015 points to end at 0.235 and Iluka Resources Ltd (ASX:ILU) was up 6.25% or 0.450 points to 7.650 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Bradken Ltd (ASX:BKN), which lost 4.04% or 0.045 points to trade at 1.070 in late trade. Evolution Mining Ltd (ASX:EVN) declined 3.00% or 0.035 points to end at 1.130 and Asaleo Care (ASX:AHY) shed 2.72% or 0.050 points to 1.785.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 667 to 311 and 162 ended unchanged on the Sydney Stock Exchange.
The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 12.54% to 18.431.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.18% or 2.10 to $1153.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 2.32% or 1.21 to hit $50.99 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.98% or 1.15 to trade at $57.00 a barrel.
AUD/USD was up 0.29% to 0.7428, while AUD/JPY rose 0.30% to 91.70.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.22% at 97.15.
