STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The head of Sweden's new minority government will resign if the opposition wins a budget vote on Wednesday with support from the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, a paper quoted him as saying on Tuesday.
"It is out of the question that I stay on to administer it if that budget were to win. That isn't going to happen," Dagens Nyheter quoted Prime Minister Stefan Lofven of the Social Democrats, which won general elections in September, as saying.
Even with the support of the Left Party, the ruling Social Democrats and Greens don't have enough votes to force their first budget through parliament if the Sweden Democrats back an alternative bill by the centre-right Alliance opposition bloc.
The Sweden Democrats, which are pariah in parliament, plan to unveil later on Tuesday whether to support the Alliance bill, a move that could in the worst case scenario bring down the government and lead to a new election.
