Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, Mining and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.11% to hit a new 1-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Black Diamond Group Limited (TO:BDI), which rose 14.95% or 1.58 points to trade at 12.15 at the close. Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) added 11.41% or 0.34 points to end at 3.32 and Kelt Exploration Ltd. (TO:KEL) was up 10.60% or 0.71 points to 7.41 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Tahoe Resources Inc (TO:THO), which lost 9.30% or 1.64 points to trade at 16.00 in late trade. Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TO:TXG) declined 6.52% or 0.090 points to end at 1.290 and BCE Inc. (TO:BCE) shed 3.42% or 1.94 points to 54.80.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 754 to 685 and 199 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of options, was up 3.93% to 19.05.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 0.42% or 5.20 to $1239.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in March rose 1.97% or 1.02 to hit $52.71 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract rose 0.73% or 0.43 to trade at $59.11 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.45% to 0.8024, while CAD/EUR rose 0.35% to 0.7085.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.17% at 94.69.
