Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Staples, IT and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ensign Energy Services Inc. (TO:ESI), which rose 10.68% or 1.05 points to trade at 10.88 at the close. Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. (TO:PRE) added 6.86% or 0.30 points to end at 4.67 and Sherritt International Corporation (TO:S) was up 5.64% or 0.15 points to 2.81 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TO:FM), which lost 3.53% or 0.69 points to trade at 18.83 in late trade. Bonavista Energy Corporation (TO:BNP) declined 3.23% or 0.27 points to end at 8.10 and Cineplex Inc. (TO:CGX) shed 2.84% or 1.37 points to 46.91.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 736 to 665 and 191 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.85% to 14.82.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 1.15% or 13.50 to $1188.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.33% or 0.20 to hit $58.95 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $66.46 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.56% to 0.8271, while CAD/EUR rose 1.01% to 0.7416.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.19% at 95.56.
