France shares lower at close of trade; CAC 40 down 1.72%

Investing.com – France equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the General Retailers, Basic Materials and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Paris, the CAC 40 lost 1.72% to hit a new 3-month low, while the SBF 120 index fell 1.70%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the CAC 40 were LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA (PA:LVMH), which fell 0.07% or 0.10 points to trade at 136.60 at the close. Vivendi SA (PA:VIV) fell 0.21% or 0.04 points to end at 19.06 and Essilor International Compagnie Generale d`Optique SA (PA:ESSI) was down 0.27% or 0.30 points to 111.85 in late trade.

Biggest losers included ArcelorMittal SA (AS:ISPA), which lost 5.55% or 0.20 points to trade at 3.49 in late trade. Compagnie de Saint Gobain SA (PA:SGOB) declined 4.31% or 1.64 points to end at 36.45 and Technip (PA:TECF) shed 3.67% or 1.53 points to 40.12.

The top performers on the SBF 120 were Numericable Pr (PA:NUME) which rose 1.36% to 37.505, Ingenico Group (PA:INGC) which was up 0.67% to settle at 112.70 and Iliad (PA:ILD) which gained 0.44% to close at 226.00.

The worst performers were Vallourec (PA:VLLP) which was down 7.53% to 7.13 in late trade, Ipsos (PA:ISOS) which lost 6.78% to settle at 19.40 and DBV Technologies (PA:DBV) which was down 6.04% to 62.490 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 645 to 107 and 37 ended unchanged on the Paris Stock Exchange.

The CAC 40 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of CAC 40 options, was up 10.68% to 28.54.

In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was up 1.47% or 16.10 to $1108.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 1.65% or 0.56 to hit $33.41 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.86% or 0.29 to trade at $33.94 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.77% to 1.0861, while EUR/GBP rose 1.17% to 0.7454.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.47% at 98.81.
