Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Mining, Healthcare and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.85%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were New Gold Inc . (TO:NGD), which rose 7.65% or 0.25 points to trade at 3.52 at the close. Teck Resources Ltd (TO:TCKb) added 7.64% or 0.86 points to end at 12.11 and Sierra Wireless Inc . (TO:SW) was up 7.43% or 2.18 points to 31.52 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG), which lost 18.92% or 7.95 points to trade at 34.06 in late trade. Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO:CPG) declined 4.76% or 1.14 points to end at 22.80 and Genworth MI Canada Inc . (TO:MIC) shed 4.59% or 1.52 points to 31.60.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 766 to 616 and 177 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 36.99% to 8.57 a new 52-week low.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.10% or 1.20 to $1156.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.06% or 0.56 to hit $52.18 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.22% or 0.72 to trade at $58.28 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.62% to 0.7853, while CAD/EUR rose 0.72% to 0.7134.
The US Dollar Index was up 1.03% at 96.94.
