Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy, Consumer Staples and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.10%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR), which rose 7.02% or 0.20 points to trade at 3.05 at the close. New Gold Inc . (TO:NGD) added 6.97% or 0.26 points to end at 3.99 and Alamos Gold Inc (TO:AGI) was up 6.19% or 0.36 points to 6.18 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Bankers Petroleum Ltd . (TO:BNK), which lost 6.87% or 0.180 points to trade at 2.440 in late trade. Gran Tierra Energy Inc . (TO:GTE) declined 5.82% or 0.220 points to end at 3.560 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR) shed 5.67% or 0.42 points to 6.99.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 761 to 579 and 207 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.27% to 18.51.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 1.07% or 12.30 to $1156.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.14% or 0.07 to hit $49.50 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.99% or 0.53 to trade at $52.52 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.53% to 0.7724, while CAD/EUR fell 0.19% to 0.6800.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.50% at 94.92.
