Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials, Healthcare and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.10%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ensign Energy Services Inc . (TO:ESI), which rose 8.46% or 0.63 points to trade at 8.08 at the close. Interfor Corp (TO:IFP) added 6.81% or 0.98 points to end at 15.38 and Air Canada (TO:AC) was up 5.47% or 0.650 points to 12.530 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Novagold Resources Inc . (TO:NG), which lost 6.30% or 0.38 points to trade at 5.65 in late trade. First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR) declined 5.44% or 0.62 points to end at 10.77 and Torex Gold Resources Inc (TO:TXG) shed 5.40% or 1.290 points to 22.590.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 569 to 550 and 154 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.26% to 14.62.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 1.01% or 12.80 to $1255.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 1.44% or 0.72 to hit $50.55 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 1.47% or 0.76 to trade at $52.62 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.25% to 0.7570, while CAD/EUR rose 0.19% to 0.6786.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.59% at 96.70.
