Intel Earnings Preview: Strong Quarter Needed to Keep Path Open Toward Past Highs

Published 22/01/2026, 09:45

Intel’s (NASDAQ:INTC) share price has swung sharply in recent months. It fell to multi-year lows during the summer, then climbed to its highest level in three years.

Part of that rebound came after the US government bought a 9.9% stake in Intel and backed the company with guaranteed orders. Confidence improved further when NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) bought $5 billion worth of Intel shares. These moves reflect the wider push by the US to strengthen its domestic chip industry and reduce reliance on overseas rivals, led by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM).

The next big test for Intel is Panther Lake, its newly announced laptop processor. How well this chip performs will play a major role in shaping Intel’s outlook, both over the coming quarters and over the longer term.

Intel Fights for Its Survival

Intel unveiled its latest laptop processor, the Core Ultra 300 series, known by its development name Panther Lake, at the start of this year. According to Intel, the chip is built using its new 18A manufacturing process and is expected to deliver higher performance while using less power.

This launch matters because Intel has struggled in recent years. Problems during the development and rollout of its new manufacturing technology hurt execution and allowed rivals to pull ahead. Intel lost its long-held leadership position in processors, and its share price fell sharply as a result. Since laptops remain Intel’s biggest revenue source, a weak reception for Panther Lake would put further pressure on the company’s financial outlook.

So far, investor reaction has been constructive. Confidence has also been tied to leadership under Lip-Bu Tan, whose focus has been on fixing both finances and manufacturing discipline. If Panther Lake performs as promised, Intel would be better placed to challenge rivals such as Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD), Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), Apple, and TSMC in the increasingly competitive laptop chip market.

For this scenario to play out, two things need to happen: solid quarterly results and strong sales of the newly launched product. If the price pulls back, buying interest is likely to appear near the sharply rising upward trend line.
