Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Consumer Discretionary, Materials and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI), which rose 7.98% or 0.26 points to trade at 3.52 at the close. Progressive Waste Solutions Ltd. (TO:BIN) added 7.32% or 2.37 points to end at 34.76 and New Flyer Industries Inc (TO:NFI) was up 5.88% or 1.63 points to 29.33 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Ensign Energy Services Inc . (TO:ESI), which lost 6.91% or 0.54 points to trade at 7.27 in late trade. Enerplus Corporation (TO:ERF) declined 6.73% or 0.33 points to end at 4.57 and Paramount Resources Ltd . (TO:POU) shed 5.45% or 0.36 points to 6.25.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 713 to 618 and 157 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 6.74% to 20.19.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was up 0.20% or 2.10 to $1077.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 2.33% or 0.85 to hit $35.91 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 2.16% or 0.81 to trade at $36.41 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.22% to 0.7150, while CAD/EUR rose 0.54% to 0.6652.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.54% at 99.47.
