Smartphones powered by Alphabet Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google Android operating system could be among the first devices to use a next-generation technology that is focused on improving the on-demand AI experience.

What Happened: Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) could be the first to use a next-generation memory technology that is focused on AI.

According to Korean news publication Ajunews, there is growing speculation that Qualcomm's upcoming flagship chipset, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, could be amongst the first to integrate the next-generation LPDDR6 memory technology.

Qualcomm is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset in October. This chipset is expected to power the next generation of flagship Android phones, including Samsung Electronics Co Ltd.'s (OTCPK: SSNLF) Galaxy S25 series and the OnePlus 13, among others.

Leaked benchmarks of Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship chipset also point at the performance that reportedly crushes Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AAPL) upcoming iPhone 16, expected to be powered by the A18 Bionic chipset.

In addition to this, Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) and American Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) will also get to use a more advanced version of flash memory – GDDR7 – for their next-generation of GPUs, including the RTX 50-series and RDNA4, respectively.

Why It Matters: Driving the need for faster memory is the increasing demand for on-device AI – Samsung's Galaxy S24 and Google's Pixel 8 series are two examples of devices that feature generative AI.

Apple, too, is working on adding generative AI features to the upcoming iPhone 16 with a supercharged Siri.

LPDDR6 and GDDR7 are expected to significantly improve AI inference performance within devices, meeting the needs of major customers like Apple and Qualcomm.

The introduction of GDDR7 is anticipated to dramatically enhance the on-device AI performance of next-generation GPUs and PCs equipped with them.
