Investing.com – U.K. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Food & Drug Retailers, Tobacco and General Retailers sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in London, the FTSE 100 rose 0.94%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the FTSE 100 were Sainsbury(J) (LONDON:SBRY), which rose 3.67% or 9.50 points to trade at 268.60 at the close. Tesco (LONDON:TSCO) added 3.65% or 8.50 points to end at 241.35 and Kingfisher (LONDON:KGF) was up 3.47% or 12.30 points to 367.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Tullow Oil Plc (LONDON:TLW), which lost 5.73% or 17.10 points to trade at 281.20 in late trade. CRH (LONDON:CRH) declined 4.42% or 80.00 points to end at 1731.00 and Sports Direct Intl Plc (LONDON:SPD) shed 2.36% or 15.50 points to 641.50.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1173 to 898 and 379 ended unchanged on the London Stock Exchange.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 0.10% or 1.10 to $1153.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in May fell 2.72% or 1.28 to hit $45.78 a barrel, while the May Brent Oil contract fell 2.75% or 1.51 to trade at $53.49 a barrel.
GBP/USD was up 0.61% to 1.4837, while EUR/GBP rose 0.41% to 0.7146.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.83% at 99.88.
