Strikes could cause beer shortages and leave fast food chains and pubs facing supply issues heading into the Christmas period.

Fears of a Christmas beer drought have arisen after workers from the Budweiser and Stella Artois breweries walked out until 22 October said the GMB union following a collapse in discussions over pay.

Strikes also look set to affect fast food chains as 93% of staff at Best Food Logistics, which supplies the likes of Burger King, KFC and Pret a Manger, rejected a 6% pay increase, leading GMB union to start balloting roughly 600 of its members at the company.

The action comes as owner Bridgepoint Group PLC looks to float Burger King on the London Stock Exchange.

Unite meanwhile said almost 1000 GXO logistics staff, responsible for 40% of UK beer deliveries, will walk out on 31 October for five days, creating concern that pubs will face depleted stocks when the World Cup starts on 20 November.

"Best Food's parent companies Booker and Tesco (LON:TSCO) are making incredibly healthy profits and paying large dividends while leaving these workers crushed by the cost of living,” said GMB national officer, Nadine Houghton.

"Now some of their biggest clients may well be left short this Christmas because they won't meet GMB's reasonable request.”

Many workers across the UK are facing real-term pay cuts as pay increases fail to match inflation, currently at 9.9%, sparking a wave of strikes, including by dock workers and Royal Mail (LON:IDSI) employees.

Health workers, including nurses, are also currently being balloted for strike action after the government said there is limited scope to increase its offer of a 3% raise.
