Proactive Investors - Neuralink has achieved a significant milestone with the first human recipient of its brain-chip implant having fully recovered from the surgery and now able to control a computer cursor through thought alone.
The news, revealed by founder Elon Musk in an online event, marks a crucial step in the firm's ambitious journey to revolutionize brain-computer interfaces.
Last month, Neuralink said it had implanted the brain computer chip (pictured) in its first human patient as part of a clinical trial it is calling Prime, to evaluate the safety and functionality of the chips.
The brain-computer-interface (BCI) implants are designed to enable individuals to control devices using only their thoughts, facilitated by wireless brain-computer interface technology placed in the part of the brain that plans movement.
Neuralink is now focused on enhancing the first patient's ability to perform tasks, such as mouse clicks, via thought.
In the Prime study, the BCIs are being tested on adults suffering from quadriplegia, or paralysis of all four limbs, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease resulting in progressive muscular paralysis.
