India shares higher at close of trade; Nifty 50 up 0.38%

Investing.com – India equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Capital Goods, Fast Moving Consumer Goods and Real Estate sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 gained 0.38%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index climbed 0.64%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Housing Development Finance Corp. (NS:HDFC), which rose 2.90% or 32.75 points to trade at 1162.65 at the close. Tech Mahindra Limited (NS:TEML) added 2.66% or 12.40 points to end at 479.35 and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (NS:BHEL) was up 2.51% or 3.00 points to 122.75 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Idea Cellular Ltd (NS:IDEA), which lost 5.30% or 6.35 points to trade at 113.50 in late trade. Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone (NS:APSE) declined 4.92% or 10.25 points to end at 198.00 and UltraTech Cement Ltd (NS:ULTC) shed 2.03% or 64.65 points to 3119.00.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Housing Development Finance Corp. (BO:HDFC) which rose 2.90% to 1163.85, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BO:BHEL) which was up 2.55% to settle at 122.85 and Tata Motors Ltd. (BO:TAMO) which gained 2.46% to close at 391.20.

The worst performers were Bharti Airtel Ltd (BO:BRTI) which was down 1.55% to 355.20 in late trade, Hindalco Industries Ltd. (BO:HALC) which lost 0.88% to settle at 90.50 and Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (BO:HLL) which was down 0.29% to 851.15 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 742 to 672 and 72 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 443 fell and 381 advanced, while 30 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.

The India Vix, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was down 1.58% to 17.1700.

In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 0.44% or 5.55 to $1279.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 2.33% or 1.02 to hit $44.80 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.86% or 0.83 to trade at $45.45 a barrel.

USD/INR was down 0.13% to 66.540, while EUR/INR fell 0.72% to 76.0100.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.42% at 93.66.
