Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Mining, Materials and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.41%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. (TO:PRE), which rose 17.87% or 0.57 points to trade at 3.76 at the close. Canexus Corporation (TO:CUS) added 7.93% or 0.13 points to end at 1.77 and Gran Tierra Energy Inc. (TO:GTE) was up 5.79% or 0.250 points to 4.570 in late trade.
Biggest losers included DHX Media Ltd (TO:DHXb), which lost 7.49% or 0.64 points to trade at 7.90 in late trade. Amaya Gaming Group Inc (TO:AYA) declined 6.08% or 1.73 points to end at 26.71 and Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TO:FVI) shed 5.57% or 0.25 points to 4.24.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 845 to 635 and 215 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.45% to 15.74.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.20% or 2.40 to $1198.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 0.27% or 0.15 to hit $56.55 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 0.91% or 0.57 to trade at $63.90 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.85% to 0.8204, while CAD/EUR rose 0.12% to 0.7623.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.71% at 97.85.
