Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy, REITs and Real Estate sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.73% to hit a new 1-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Parkland Fuel Corporation (TSX:PKI), which rose 5.32% or 2.18 points to trade at 43.12 at the close. Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN) added 3.21% or 0.59 points to end at 18.95 and Africa Oil Corp (TSX:AOI) was up 2.04% or 0.05 points to 2.50 in late trade.
Biggest losers included BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which lost 10.21% or 0.43 points to trade at 3.78 in late trade. B2Gold Corp (TSX:BTO) declined 5.78% or 0.23 points to end at 3.75 and Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) shed 5.41% or 0.22 points to 3.85.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 759 to 222 and 94 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 8.50% to 14.04 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.04% or 24.80 to $2,398.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.06% or 0.05 to hit $85.61 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.14% or 0.13 to trade at $90.32 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.07% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.03% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.17% at 106.01.
