Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Consumer Staples, Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.51%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TO:IVN), which rose 10.20% or 0.310 points to trade at 3.350 at the close. Empire Company Ltd (TO:EMPa) added 7.66% or 1.19 points to end at 16.72 and Intertain Group (TO:IT) was up 5.89% or 0.56 points to 10.06 in late trade.
Biggest losers included AltaGas Ltd . (TO:ALA), which lost 4.90% or 1.65 points to trade at 32.00 in late trade. Torex Gold Resources Inc (TO:TXG) declined 3.92% or 1.090 points to end at 26.740 and Alaris Royalty Corp . (TO:AD) shed 3.58% or 0.840 points to 22.630.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 763 to 406 and 121 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.46% to 12.56.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was down 0.15% or 1.85 to $1197.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 0.94% or 0.50 to hit $52.51 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.80% or 0.45 to trade at $55.56 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.09% to 0.7614, while CAD/EUR fell 0.13% to 0.7160.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.26% at 101.20.
