Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were HudBay Minerals Inc. (TO:HBM), which rose 8.09% or 0.62 points to trade at 8.28 at the close. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) added 7.26% or 0.85 points to end at 12.55 and Tahoe Resources Inc (TO:THO) was up 5.91% or 0.38 points to 6.81 in late trade.
Biggest losers included ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI), which lost 4.32% or 0.070 points to trade at 1.550 in late trade. Precision Drilling Corporation (TO:PD) declined 3.98% or 0.16 points to end at 3.86 and Gran Tierra Energy Inc . (TO:GTE) shed 2.80% or 0.080 points to 2.780.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 581 to 494 and 146 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.43% to 13.79.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.21% or 2.55 to $1215.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.64% or 0.73 to hit $45.13 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.51% or 0.71 to trade at $47.59 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.28% to 0.7735, while CAD/EUR fell 0.84% to 0.6748.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.29% at 95.53.
