Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Materials, Utilities and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.23%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Calibre Mining Corp (TSX:CXB), which rose 7.18% or 0.13 points to trade at 1.94 at the close. Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX:WDO) added 7.01% or 0.78 points to end at 11.91 and SSR Mining Inc (TSX:SSRM) was up 6.89% or 0.42 points to 6.52 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Brookfield Business Partners LP (TSX:BBU_u), which lost 3.61% or 0.93 points to trade at 24.81 in late trade. Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) declined 2.68% or 0.26 points to end at 9.44 and ATS Corporation (TSX:ATS) shed 2.53% or 1.13 points to 43.59.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 663 to 278 and 81 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.31% to 8.77.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.32% or 30.80 to $2,364.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.06% or 0.88 to hit $83.69 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.01% or 0.87 to trade at $87.11 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.30% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.09% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.36% at 105.03.
