Investing.com – Australia equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Resources and Metals & Mining sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 rose 1.46% to hit a new 3-year high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Beach Energy Ltd (ASX:BPT), which rose 15.59% or 0.158 points to trade at 1.167 at the close. Senex Energy Ltd (ASX:SXY) added 14.04% or 0.040 points to end at 0.325 and Karoon Gas Australia Ltd (ASX:KAR) was up 9.63% or 0.210 points to 2.390 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Navitas Ltd (ASX:NVT), which lost 9.52% or 0.500 points to trade at 4.750 in late trade. Sigma Pharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX:SIP) declined 4.88% or 0.040 points to end at 0.780 and Qantas Airways Ltd (ASX:QAN) shed 3.98% or 0.100 points to 2.410.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 382 to 203 and 50 ended unchanged on the Sydney Stock Exchange.
The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 3.18% to 14.394.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 0.23% or 2.90 to $1279.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in March rose 1.29% or 0.64 to hit $50.21 a barrel, while the March Brent Oil contract rose 1.27% or 0.70 to trade at $55.60 a barrel.
AUD/USD was down 1.91% to 0.7654, while AUD/JPY fell 2.21% to 89.69.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.04% at 94.78.
