Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, Industrials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.87%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. (TO:ATA), which rose 8.21% or 1.10 points to trade at 14.50 at the close. Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) added 7.20% or 0.17 points to end at 2.53 and Crescent Point Energy Corp. (TO:CPG) was up 5.79% or 1.67 points to 30.53 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Open Text Corporation (TO:OTC), which lost 13.33% or 7.97 points to trade at 51.80 in late trade. First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TO:FM) declined 5.74% or 0.99 points to end at 16.26 and Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG) shed 4.73% or 0.35 points to 7.05.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 765 to 655 and 206 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.01% to 12.06 a new 6-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.26% or 3.10 to $1205.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 2.94% or 1.74 to hit $60.72 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 2.31% or 1.50 to trade at $66.53 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 0.8192, while CAD/EUR fell 0.14% to 0.7373.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.20% at 95.46.
