Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Financials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.14% to hit a new 3-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Alacer Gold Corp. (TO:ASR), which rose 8.43% or 0.22 points to trade at 2.83 at the close. Detour Gold Corporation (TO:DGC) added 4.91% or 0.75 points to end at 16.01 and Black Diamond Group Limited (TO:BDI) was up 4.07% or 0.68 points to 17.40 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Painted Pony P (TO:PPY), which lost 3.79% or 0.30 points to trade at 7.62 in late trade. NuVista Energy Ltd. (TO:NVA) declined 3.71% or 0.280 points to end at 7.260 and Nevsun Resources Ltd. (TO:NSU) shed 3.38% or 0.160 points to 4.580.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 731 to 699 and 184 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.28% to 14.60.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.40% or 4.70 to $1185.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.45% or 0.28 to hit $60.17 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.05% or 0.04 to trade at $63.73 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.43% to 0.8172, while CAD/EUR fell 0.33% to 0.7210.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.77% at 94.49.
