Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Materials, REITs and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.50% to hit a new 1-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Centerra Gold Inc (TO:CG), which rose 15.49% or 0.99 points to trade at 7.38 at the close. Torex Gold Resources Inc . (TO:TXG) added 14.58% or 0.210 points to end at 1.650 and B2Gold Corp (TO:BTO) was up 10.79% or 0.150 points to 1.540 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM), which lost 11.20% or 0.55 points to trade at 4.36 in late trade. Encana Corporation (TO:ECA) declined 9.01% or 0.48 points to end at 4.85 and Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TO:AAV) shed 8.10% or 0.630 points to 7.150.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 783 to 483 and 314 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.50% to 24.00.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 1.91% or 23.10 to $1234.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.46% or 0.14 to hit $30.52 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 1.45% or 0.50 to trade at $34.00 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.52% to 0.7277, while CAD/EUR fell 0.27% to 0.6554.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.00% at 96.88.
