Investing.com – U.K. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Life Insurance/Assurance, Food & Drug Retailers and Banking sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 gained 1.39%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Tesco PLC (LON:TSCO), which rose 6.81% or 10.9000 points to trade at 171.0000 at the close. Old Mutual PLC (LON:OML) added 5.86% or 9.80 points to end at 177.10 and Legal & General Group PLC (LON:LGEN) was up 5.11% or 11.500 points to 236.500 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Fresnillo PLC (LON:FRES), which lost 3.34% or 36.00 points to trade at 1041.00 in late trade. Randgold Resources Ltd (LON:RRS) declined 3.21% or 195.00 points to end at 5885.00 and Weir Group PLC (LON:WEIR) shed 1.59% or 20.00 points to 1234.00.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1363 to 642 and 470 ended unchanged on the London Stock Exchange.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 1.74% or 21.75 to $1229.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.98% or 0.47 to hit $48.55 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.48% or 0.23 to trade at $48.58 a barrel.
GBP/USD was up 0.94% to 1.4620, while EUR/GBP fell 1.63% to 0.7621.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.39% at 95.60.
