Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Energy, Industrials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 2.94%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Mitel Networks Corporation (TO:MNW), which rose 18.92% or 1.64 points to trade at 10.31 at the close. Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR) added 16.16% or 0.58 points to end at 4.17 and Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) was up 15.00% or 0.36 points to 2.76 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM), which lost 5.15% or 0.14 points to trade at 2.58 in late trade. B2Gold Corp (TO:BTO) declined 3.13% or 0.030 points to end at 0.930 and MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) shed 3.00% or 0.15 points to 4.85.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1016 to 334 and 165 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.85% to 24.09.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was up 0.03% or 0.30 to $1098.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 8.89% or 2.62 to hit $32.16 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 9.71% or 2.84 to trade at $32.09 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.87% to 0.7070, while CAD/EUR rose 1.61% to 0.6549.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.50% at 99.64.
