Benzinga - A fake token named after the controversial teenage influencer, Lil Tay, was launched merely a day after her supposed death was announced on her verified Instagram account.

What Happened: The Lil Tay cryptocurrency was introduced on the BNB Smart Chain early Thursday morning, with a limited supply of only 100 coins.

Tay, 15-year-old, whose real name is Claire Hope, gained fame for her audacious online persona and staged controversies.

Shortly after the launch, the official Lil Tay token Twitter account issued a statement, dispelling rumors and warning the public of potential scams.

"Sharing this to let everybody know that we will not be launching anything soon. We've been in development for 4-5 months now. If anybody is reaching out to you for money saying they're involved with $liltay it's not true. If you see another token/coin with liltay it's a scam," the official Twitter handle said.

Why It Matters: The confusion surrounding Tay’s death deepened when, just 24 hours after a new post surfaced on her Instagram account. In the post, she claimed to be alive and attributed the previous announcement to being hacked by a “3rd party.”

The teenage influencer, however, has remained absent from any on-camera appearances.
