Benzinga - Billy Markus, the co-creator of Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) and popularly referred to as Shibetoshi Nakamoto, took a jab at former President Donald Trump for his alleged impact on free speech.

What Happened: The conversation started after tech mogul Elon Musk voiced his concerns about the transformation of legacy media into entities suppressing speech. "How did most of the legacy media go from superheroes of free speech to supervillains of speech suppression?"

Responding to Musk’s tweet, Markus stated, “starts with T and ends with rump,” drawing attention to Trump’s alleged involvement in free speech restrictions.

Musk’s X Corp. is currently pursuing a lawsuit against California over Assembly Bill 587 (A.B. 587), a law enacted before Musk acquired the platform, which mandates the disclosure of terms of service and the submission of reports on combating hate speech.

Last week, Markus expressed dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden in a post on X, suggesting that he believes supporters of taxing billionaires lack intelligence. Drawing attention to the national debt increase during Biden’s presidency, Markus wrote, “Joe Biden thinks you are stupid (and to be fair, everyone who hit the like button on this post is). Biden has raised the national debt by 3.7 trillion dollars during his time as President, more than all the billionaires in the US are worth combined.”

Why It Matters: The debate surrounding freedom of speech on social media platforms has garnered attention from various individuals, including billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban. Cuban in May said that while everyone technically has access to the platforms, Musk’s far-reaching influence sets him apart. He notes that Musk’s support or denigration of individuals on Twitter can be likened to a form of “state intervention,” highlighting the power dynamics at play.

Cuban stated, “He owns the platform, he can do what he chooses. But it’s disingenuous to say Twitter is the home of free speech when he chooses to often put his thumb on the scale of reach.”
