LONDON (Reuters) - Cuadrilla has applied to the British government for consent to frack the country's first ever horizontal shale gas well at its site in Lancashire, the company said on Monday.

The drilling of this well at Cuadrilla's Preston New Road exploration site was completed in April and the firm has all the necessary permits required for hydraulic fracturing

The drilling of a second horizontal shale gas exploration well is nearing completion and an application for hydraulic fracturing will then be submitted, Cuadrilla added.

"Based on its current operations schedule Cuadrilla plans to be in a position to hydraulically fracture both horizontal wells one and two over the course of the second half of 2018," it said in a statement
