It was a muddled session, dominated by covid-19-hit earnings reports from around the world.
With the US-China tensions rumbling on in the back, TikTok used as the latest proxy for their cold war, and investors still awaiting the next coronavirus relief package, it was hard for the Dow Jones to muster much enthusiasm this Tuesday.
The US index was relatively lethargic after the bell, scraping together a 0.3% increase that allowed it to return to 26750.
Still to come post-market are earnings from electric vehicle firm Nikola (NASDAQ:NKLA), plant-substitute favourite Beyond Meat (NASDAQ:BYND) and Disney (NYSE:DIS) – which is likely to be nursing the impact of pandemic park closures – this evening.
The FTSE, meanwhile, remained caught between the 6.8% rise that greeted BP's dividend-cut, and the 5.4% fall suffered by Diageo (LON:DGE) after revealing its pre-tax profit plunged around 52%. This left the UK index down 0.1%, but still the right side of 6000.
Elsewhere the CAC was similarly sluggish just under 4900, but with the Dow Jones dropping half a percent to 12600.
