The eurozone markets remained buoyed by Wednesday’s Trump/Juncker love-in, while the FTSE sat stuck at the starting line.
A conflicted Super Thursday of UK earnings, and the continued redness of much of its commodity sector, meant that the UK index was basically unchanged as the day went on. The FTSE has really struggled to break out of the 7650 to 7700 trading bracket of the last few weeks, with such an over-stuffed corporate calendar doing it no favours.
Things couldn’t be more different over in the eurozone. The region was hugely relieved, and no doubt surprised, that the relationship didn’t worsen between the US and EU following the White House show down, allowing the eurozone indices to post some hefty growth. The CAC rose 0.6%, pushing it above 5450, while the DAX jumped 180 points, tickling 12750.
Turning to the US open and the Dow Jones currently looks like it is going to be on the FTSE end of things this Thursday. The futures have the index opening 40-ish points higher after the bell, though that does follow a 170 point surge on Wednesday night. Nevertheless, that slight rise would still have the Dow at a fresh near 20 week peak.
