Dow Jones Leads Gentle Push Higher As Investors Eye Trade Talks

Published 22/02/2019, 15:38

Choosing somewhat baseless optimism as their trading setting on Friday, the global indices gently pushed higher as the afternoon went on.

Awaiting a meeting between Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping’s envoy Liu He, the Dow Jones was pretty perky, climbing just over 100 points to cross 25950. Though March 1st might now be a softer deadline than previously thought, investors are nevertheless hungry to see some kind of resolution between the 2 superpowers sooner rather than later, so any updates over the weekend could set the tone for the final week of February.

Ignoring the latest negative data out of the eurozone – some the indices are getting increasingly good at – the DAX and CAC followed the Dow higher. The German bourse crossed 11460 as it rose 0.3%, while its French counterpart added half a percent as it shimmied past 5200.

Not quite as bubbly as at lunchtime, the FTSE fell back under 7200 as the week started to wrap up, its gains trimmed to 0.3% as the pound recovered a good chunk of its midday losses.
