Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Materials, Mining and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.22% to hit a new 52-week high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Mullen Group Ltd . (TO:MTL), which rose 11.04% or 1.57 points to trade at 15.79 at the close. Centerra Gold Inc (TO:CG) added 8.41% or 0.57 points to end at 7.35 and IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) was up 7.59% or 0.440 points to 6.240 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Precision Drilling Corporation (TO:PD), which lost 4.55% or 0.28 points to trade at 5.87 in late trade. Canadian Energy Services & Technology Corp (TO:CEU) declined 3.37% or 0.130 points to end at 3.730 and Descartes Systems Group Inc (TO:DSG) shed 3.35% or 0.89 points to 25.71.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 674 to 481 and 140 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.12% to 12.61.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.97% or 12.75 to $1332.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.62% or 1.20 to hit $44.55 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 2.35% or 1.11 to trade at $46.06 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.20% to 0.7642, while CAD/EUR fell 0.26% to 0.6933.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.21% at 96.96.
