Investing.com – U.K. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Tobacco, Real Estate Investment Trusts REITs and Real Estate sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in London, the FTSE 100 lost 0.36%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the FTSE 100 were Anglo American (LONDON:AAL), which rose 4.54% or 45.50 points to trade at 1048.50 at the close. Antofagasta (LONDON:ANTO) added 3.16% or 23.50 points to end at 766.50 and Rio Tinto (LONDON:RIO) was up 2.38% or 67.50 points to 2902.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merlin Entertainments PLC (LONDON:MERL), which lost 3.35% or 15.40 points to trade at 444.00 in late trade. Imperial Tobacco Group (LONDON:IMT) declined 2.90% or 96.00 points to end at 3210.00 and British American Tobacco (LONDON:BATS) shed 2.41% or 86.50 points to 3506.00.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1364 to 1265 and 435 ended unchanged on the London Stock Exchange.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.33% or 3.90 to $1192.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.51% or 0.91 to hit $61.11 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.99% or 0.65 to trade at $65.53 a barrel.
GBP/USD was up 0.90% to 1.5337, while EUR/GBP rose 1.04% to 0.7264.
The US Dollar Index was down 1.51% at 96.05.
