Proactive Investors - Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) risks fines of up to $135.8 million if it fails to provide the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with essential data on its autopilot system by July 1.
The NHTSA has requested information following a three-year investigation that revealed safety issues with the autopilot system, contributing to at least 467 collisions and 14 deaths from January 2018 through August 2023.
The probe concluded that the drivers involved in these incidents were not adequately engaged and that the system’s alerts were insufficient in maintaining driver attention.
Failure to provide the required information by the specified deadline could result in Tesla facing censure, including a hefty fine.
