Investing.com-- NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) plans to set up its Asian headquarters in the Taiwanese capital of Taipei, the Central News Agency reported on Tuesday citing a government official.

The Central News Agency- the national news agency of Taiwan- reported that the chipmaker was scouting locations for the move, and will hire at least 2,500 staff in Taiwan. CNA cited comments from National Development Council Minister Liu Chin-ching.

The report said Nvidia will also set up its Asian research and development center in Taiwan’s Kaohsiung, while rival AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) plans to set up an R&D center in Tainan.

Tuesday’s report comes after Taiwanese media reported in December that the company was considering Taiwan as the location for its regional headquarters. CEO Jensen Huang also teased such a move when talking at the Consumer Electronics Show last week.

Taiwan is a key part of Nvidia’s supply chain, given its heavy dependence on contract chipmaker TSMC (NYSE:TSM) and electronics giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd (TW:2317). TSMC manufactures a bulk of Nvidia’s chip designs in its foundries, while Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn (SS:601138), assembles several key components for the artificial intelligence giant.

All three companies saw a sharp increase in their share prices over the past two years, amid rapidly increasing demand from the AI industry.
