Elon Musk, who has been the centre of controversy since his $44bn takeover of Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), has claimed: “Twitter usage is at an all-time high” despite reports that users are deserting in droves.
In a tweet, the Tesla boss said: “I just hope the servers don’t melt!”
Musk’s takeover of the social media platform has sparked a hectic week, with job cuts all the way up to its executive team, legal action from sacked employees against the company and condemnation from the human rights group, Amnesty International.
After the job cuts sparked an outcry, Musk tweeted that there was “no choice when the company is losing over US$4mln a day,” something he could even tackle with a paywall, according to the Mail Online.
Reports emerged yesterday however that some staff were being asked to restart their jobs despite being fired just days before.
Musk has also suggested changes to Twitter content moderation policies which, alongside his removal of the human rights and AI ethics teams, has caused concern amongst many after he laid out a “commitment to free speech”.
Alongside banning some parody accounts on the platform, the new CEO has also announced that verified users will be charged to retain blue ticks on their profiles, in an attempt to rid the site of fake accounts, alongside strengthening its advertising offers.
As a result of the uncertainty caused by Musk’s takeover, companies have moved to suspend their advertising on the site, including General Motors Co (NYSE:GM) and Volkswagen (ETR:VOWG_p) Group (XETRA:VOW)’s Audi.
Advertising is the social media group's main source of revenue.
